Here's a sub-$1000 vintage guitar with heaps of street cred. To me there is nothing more cool than a butterscotch, black-guard Telecaster, and these E-series Fender Squier made-in-Japan (MIJ) Teles from the mid 1980s have become recognised for the great guitars they are.
The 1985/86 Fender problems are well-documented, especially the way that it has been estimated that as many as 80% of the Fenders sold in the US between late 1984 and mid-86 were sourced from Fender Japan. You can read more in the description of my MIJ 1985 Paisley Tele, or many other sources, but the Squier models were a very important aspect to Fender's survival at this time, where a 'budget' line could be offered while the frontline 'Fender' instruments were produced by exactly the same factory.
The Japanese MIJ (Made in Japan) Squiers were made by FujiGen up to 1997, while the Japanese CIJ (Crafted in Japan) Squires were made by Tokai and Dyna from 1997. The first Squiers were reissues of original Fender designs such as those from the 1950s and 1960s. This one is fitted with a 6-saddle bridge to enable accurate intonation, and has had a Seymour Duncan bridge pickup fitted (looks like an STK-T2b Hot Lead Stacked Humbucker model), which sounds fantastic. It also has a Gibson-style surface-mount output jack fitted, and tuners have been upgraded to Schallers. Check out the 'more pictures' link below to see photographs of these details.
The guitar is ultra-cool with its play wear, which is also testimony to just how playable this guitar is! Looks, feel and sound are all there in bucketloads, and these E-serial MIJ Squires are also very collectable. Serial number is E687984, which means it was made at the Fuji-gen plant between 1984 and 1987.
Neck is 41mm wide at the nut up to 51mm at the 12th fret, while it's not very deep - about 20mm thick for most of the neck. I'd describe the profile as a C. It is extremely playable!
The guitar is ready to rock, and comes with an Epiphone-branded hard
shell case, which fits the guitar really well.
